6-year-old dies after CT scan, family alleges negligence

Times of India, June 29th, 2014, Page 3

A medical negligence death has been a common accidental death in every country in the world. In Mumbai, whether this case is real or alleged, medical deaths are a real thing. Small children dying of an overdose of anaesthetic is even more common. Since children can’t lie still in a CT or MRI machine, it is imperative that they’re knocked out before they can be scanned. A slight oversight by any of the overseeing technicians can result in a death. It is a massive inconvenience for the clinic in question and a horrible tragedy for the family. This can be safeguarded by checking licenses of all such clinics and ensuring that they have registered medical personnel in charge.

Water Cut: BMC to decide today

Hindustan Times, July 2nd, 2014, Page 3

We’ve faced a horrid May sun which lasted till the end of June. The rains, which make their way to Maharashtra by the sixth month of the year, didn’t appear till July, causing the water in the supply lakes of Mumbai to decrease to dangerous levels. This has put the BMC on high alert and seeing as how Mumbaikars won’t use water judiciously; a water cut is the only measure to sustain a healthy amount of water in case the monsoons fail. There were plans to artificially seed clouds if the monsoons didn’t make it to the city on time. But seeing as how the rains have arrived, it is only a matter of waiting for a suitable duration of time to ensure that we have a good supply to last us till the next year.

Police question people victim met every day

Hindustan Times, June 30th, 2014, Page 5

The problem with man has always been his callous attitude towards humanity. Another problem seems to be unemployment and dissatisfaction amongst today’s youth. This leads to a lot of crime throughout the country, specifically in a densely populated city like Mumbai. Another problem is regarding children abandoning their helpless parents. This has led to rise in the incidence of crime against elderly people. The solutions for these are obvious. Harsh action should be taken against crime and it is also important that our elders should have a place of respect in society.

Thousands stranded during crush hour after fire at CST admin bldg

Times of India, June 28th, 2014, Page 2

The biggest problem with all government administrative office buildings in Mumbai is that they haven’t been refurbished since the British left India. These buildings tend to have old fuses, faulty wiring, and water seepages in the walls, which leads to unpredictable fires. The beauty of the buildings built by the British is unsurpassed though. The BMC should enforce departments using the buildings to undergo a strict structural audit along with a safety check to ensure the safety of the people working in these buildings. Clutter should be avoided to make sure the building doesn’t just light up easily.

Maha records most 2-wheeler deaths for third year in a row

Times of India, July 12th, 2014, Page 4

I personally believe (even though the statistics do not indicate it) that Pune will have the highest number of deaths due to accidents since I’ve seen how dangerous the vehicular traffic is in Pune. Mumbai used to be relatively safe till about a couple of years back, but motorcyclists have been trying riskier stuff by the day. I think these errant drivers should be penalized severely to deter them, and repeated offences should be punished by suspension of their licenses. This will reduce, if not completely stop accidents from taking place on Maharashtra roads.
