Roxanne

It’s been ages since I wrote my last blog post, so forgive me if I seem listless and uncomfortable. Forgive me if I might appear as slightly arrogant. I hope my readers appreciate this post as much as they did my previous ones.

Today, I would really like to talk about something that was in the newspapers a while back and might still be. (Vacations, so newspapers have gone for a toss 😛 ) This is about all those Confessions pages that were going around on Facebook. They were like a virus, infecting each and every academic/non-academic/IIPM institution there was. Some were fun, some were vicious, some were plain stupid.

Truth is, I’m never interested in pages like that, but my classmate Rachna dragged my attention to this. I checked out my own college’s Confession page. It seemed pretty innocuous. Then I started scrolling down some more, and suddenly, I was hooked. I kept reading stuff about people’s miserable life, how they hated someone and they had found a new way to express it. People can become brutal when the bounds of civilisation vanish. (Some advantages to having Lord of the Flies for Literature is you learn stuff like this 😛 ) I made sure I did not like any of the posts or comments and didn’t make a comment of my own. I know how immature even the most mature people can be. I was sure someone would report it to the management of the college or even the police.

And I was correct, it shook India pretty badly. People starting complaining to the police and the cyber cell. Teachers were insulted on these Confession pages, and there was no way you could track down the guilty party. Kids were getting bolder by the minutes. One Confession page I saw (thanks DK) was filled with sexual confessions. And suddenly, as fast as the pages had mutated, they sunk into oblivion. My class Confession page (believe it!) has been deleted because the admin realised it was not sensible anymore. Not many people are confessing on these pages anymore. It’s almost as if they never existed. Maybe people needed a time to vent all their anger and they’re probably done with it.

But the rage it leaves in the hearts of the people who are included in the Confessions will never be undone.
